Navigating the year’s top trends in clothes
without breaking the bank!
It’s back-to-school time, and you all know what that means: back-to-school shopping. A yearly ritual that creates excitement and stress, the latter of the two being the emotion that usually dominates. Not only do kids ‘need’ back-to-school clothes, but in the past few years, the kids clothing industry has actually been following adult fashion trends. Unfortunately, following these trends while shopping for your children may be a little harder on your wallet than you intended. Luckily, there are now stores that sell these trendy duds for less. So what kind of styles should you be looking for this fall? They’re essentially runway clothes right out of the pages of your fashion magazines, but smaller. Kids have grown conscious of what they are wearing, and back-to-school shopping is not just about the parents picking out clothes for their kids anymore. In fact, those days are long gone. Be prepared for them to want a say in what they are going to wear; and, just so you’re prepared, this fall’s top trends for young boys and girls include:
Metallics: Look for metallic accents on clothes. These accents can be found in a variety of places, such as the threading in a top, skirt, or pair of pants; a design on an item of clothing; or even a pair of shoes. Regardless of where you find it, it’s in style.
Autumn colors: Earth tones, such as deep browns, olive greens, and rich oranges (think burnt sienna) are in this season. Black, gray and dark denim are also key colors to any fall wardrobe.
Mixing and matching: Bold patterns are big for the fall, and they look best when they’re combined with other patterns.
Layering: Similar to the style of this past spring, layering is in; and, it is a great way to keep your child stylish and snugly! The more layers, the better, be it a T-shirt over a long sleeved shirt or a variety of tops with a big cozy sweater over top.
Sporty: The sporty look is back this year, with athletic-inspired items taking the spotlight. Training jackets, jerseys, and canvas sneakers are great additions to a sporty wardrobe.
Comfy and cozy: Ah, the joy of autumn in Calgary. Aside from pumpkin pie, hot chocolate, and playing in the leaves, bulky sweaters, soft corduroy, and flannel are all taking their place in the season to come.
Leggings: Leggings will also remain in style for the fall, and they’re an excellent way to keep your daughter’s legs warm with shorter skirts. Again, keep the bold patterns in mind to make the outfit that much snazzier.
Now that you know what to buy, where do you buy it? Well, children’s stores and boutiques do have the trends of the fall. But if they are a little out of your price range, it’s a really good idea to check out bigger stores that have both adult and children’s clothes. They tend to have variations of the adult’s clothing in the children’s section, for a fraction of the price. Old Navy (see oldnavy.com for store locations) is a great choice for less expensive kid’s clothes, as is H&M, with a new location in Market Mall.
